The Airports Authority of India has announced that some national airlines at Chennai International Airport resumed their services on 06 December 2015, after being suspended since 02 December 2015 due to severe flooding.
Daytime operations for domestic flights began in the morning, but it was not immediately clear when international flights would restart. Airport officials have stated that the runway has been cleared for landings and departures after inspections were carried out by officials and technical experts. The aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation is expected to soon make a decision regarding full-fledged operations at the airport.
Although Chennai Airport has officially reopened, extensive flight delays will likely continue for at least several days as normal operations gradually resume and the backlog in stranded passengers is cleared. Airlines will also need to reposition aircraft to resume regular flight schedules.
