Whether you’re on a family holiday or heading on a romantic couples getaway, a resort’s design and decor is a major part of your holiday experience. Marc Hertrich, a world-renowned hotel architect, has transformed Club Med’s holiday resorts for the past decade, and shares his insights and inspirations for his design of Club Med Bali below.

A Bali resort with harmony between culture and modernity

From the very first 5-Trident Resort at Plantation d’Albion in Mauritius, to Club Med’s first resort in China (Guilin), I have always garnered deep satisfaction from the fresh creative challenges of each extraordinary location of Club Med Resorts. The magic of the Balinese island provided wonderful inspiration for the renovation of Club Med Bali Nusa Dua.

My aim was to allow the cultural wealth of Indonesia to mingle with modernity, and to create a strong, innovative design by drawing on the traditional materials, shapes and colours of the region. I wanted to give these elements a contemporary twist by making them less ornate and more functional.

Reinventing the all-inclusive holiday experience in Bali

The Deck restaurant was designed to transport guests to another world by utilising traditional Balinese houses and surrounding them with water. We renovated the houses, playing with customary materials such as wood, together with sleek chrome, shiny glazed tiles, and unique furniture lifted up from the floor. This new concept restaurant’s design complements the inventive, international cuisine and premium open bar available on a holiday to Bali.

Club Med resorts always have beautiful grounds, much larger than conventional hotels. This helped me to imagine very separate zones, each one expressing an individual theme. Club Med is known for offering maximum freedom to all of its guests, whether travelling on a holiday with kids, a romantic getaway, or a honeymoon. It was important to reflect this in the design.

The separate areas allow guests to easily choose from quiet spaces, such as the Zen pool and lounges, or a range of energetic sports activities and dynamic areas, like the Kids Clubs, family pool and local excursions. Ultimately, it means guests can find moments of tranquillity in a family village and children can explore to their heart’s content.

Creativity and culture: family holidays reimagined

When travelling to Bali with kids, the whole family needs to be catered for. The new family space in Club Med Bali includes a Baby Club Med for babies aged 4 – 23 months and novel children’s facilities, including a music academy, local art studio and games factory. These are devised to encourage fun and friendship, while celebrating this island paradise.

By infusing the Balinese culture into these renovations, guests are inspired to explore beyond the resort on excursions into the local village tailored to suit the guests’ wishes.

Ultimately, it was most important that the new design model was captured in each section of Club Med Bali to ensure the harmony between modernity and Balinese culture remains consistent throughout the resort.
